We all want to make positive improvements in our lives, but sometimes it can be overwhelming to figure out where to begin.
I personally love the inspiration I get from reading a good self-development book. While you actually have to do the work to apply the strategies provided to your own life to have them make an impact, it all starts with that motivation that comes from a spark of inspiration while you’re reading.
I know that I can’t be the only one who is always on the lookout for some good self-development books, so I decided to do a round up of a few of my favorites to share with you all today!
These books all focus on different areas of your life, and will hopefully provide you with some encouragement and information to help you live your best life. The books I mention below cover a range of topics that include: ways to create happiness, how to live with less, living a healthier life, developing better habits, and tips for being successful in all aspects of life.
I hope these inspire you to be the best version of you that you can possibly be 🙂 Enjoy!
Inspiring Books to Help You Live Your Best Life:
Living a simple and clutter-free life
The Paperless Home – The clutter that documents and paperwork can bring into our homes and offices typically creates total chaos. Many of us get to a point where it becomes overwhelming and we feel like we can’t ever climb out of the mounds of paper we’ve been buried in.
The Paperless Home is my favorite resource that simplifies the process of going paperless and has step-by-step instructions that walks you through the process so that you don’t have to feel overwhelmed during this process. I’m currently using this book as a guide for implementing more of a paperless environment within my own home, and the sense of calm I’ve experienced through this journey of going paperless is so refreshing and inspiring.
Dress with Less and Create Your Capsule Wardrobe – If you are feeling overwhelmed with chaos in your closet and you want to save time, money, and mental energy by creating a capsule wardrobe so that you are able to get dressed in the morning with ease, this is the perfect fit for you.
While this is more of a micro course than a book, it doesn’t cost more than a book would, and is such a unique program offered by Courtney Carver. The material includes everything you need to know to create your own capsule wardrobe and begin to enjoy the beauty of less. The Dress with Less Microcourse is a collection of instructive, inspiring PDFs, audio recordings, playlists and recorded webinars combined with a supportive private Facebook community.
Fitness
The Women’s Health Big Book of Yoga – This is a great guide to complete mind and body fitness. It includes targeted total body yoga workouts that can be completed in 15 minutes or less, core-strengthening routines, and a healthy & mindful eating plan centered around calming & cleansing foods.
Eating well
The Oh She Glows Cookbook – This is a book with over 100 vegan recipes to help you glow from the inside out. While I am personally not a vegan, I am intrigued by the concept of eating more plant-based recipes and this book is the perfect resource for that! I love that this cookbook embraces the concept of eating whole foods to nourish your body for a lifetime instead of focusing on fad diets that don’t last for more than a week or two.
Happiness
The Art of Happiness in a Troubled World – This book applies Buddhist tradition to twenty-first-century struggles in a relevant way. The result is a wise approach to dealing with human problems that is both optimistic and realistic, even in the most challenging times.
Through stories, meditations, and in-depth conversations, the Dalai Lama teaches readers to identify the cultural influences and ways of thinking that lead to personal unhappiness, making sense of the hardships we face personally, as well as the afflictions suffered by others.
The Happiness Project – The Happiness Project describes one person’s year-long attempt to discover what leads to true contentment. It is a wonderful resource for implementing more happiness and contentment into your daily life.
Habits & success
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People – True success encompasses a balance of personal and professional effectiveness, and this book is a manual for performing better in both arenas. This book covers everything from family situations to business challenges.
Before you can even begin to adopt the seven habits, you’ll need to accomplish what the author calls a “paradigm shift”–a change in perception and interpretation of how the world works. This book takes you through this change, which affects how you perceive and act regarding productivity, time management, positive thinking, developing your “proactive muscles” (acting with initiative rather than reacting), and much more. This isn’t a quick-tips-start-tomorrow kind of book, but is sure to leave you with lasting results.
How To Win Friends and Influence People – Learn the six ways to make people like you, the twelve ways to win people to your way of thinking, and the nine ways to change people without arousing resentment. This book will help you make any situation in life work for you!
Blogging
Building a Framework – By far the most comprehensive and helpful book about blogging that I’ve yet to see, and I’ve seen a lot of them.
This ebook includes 35 chapters of immediately actionable strategies and techniques to help you grow your following, work with brands, and make money from your blog. The Author, Abby Lawson, shares all of her tips for how she was able to start earning a six-figure income from her hobby blog in less than two years. Now both her and her husband work full-time on their blog and get to be stay-at-home parents to their two boys. I’m so inspired by Abby’s success and think she is extremely generous to be sharing all of the ways she was able to create her success through this ebook. {If you want to start a blog of your own, I offer a step-by-step tutorial to walk you through the process}
I hope that one of these books resonated well with you and that they help you to live your best life in one ways than one! 🙂
P.S. You can have access to many of these books for free if you are an Amazon Prime member. Amazon has a great program for Prime members that includes the opportunity to borrow over 800,000 ebooks for free – it’s a great way to borrow books without having to remember to run to the library to return them!

Isn’t it amazing? I love it!! Plus the free 2 day shipping has been amazing since having a kid. It pays for itself! I remember getting 2 day shipping on more burp cloths, diapers, etc in the newborn days when I didn’t want to take her out to the store quite yet. Lifesaver!

What a great post Christina! I have really enjoyed Jeff Shinaberger’s “More Or Less: Living A Life of Excessive Generosity.” It opened my eyes to all the possibilities when it comes to giving– something I care deeply about!

I just learned about a book called After the Ecstasy, the Laundry. Supposed to be about putting philosophy into everyday use. I could use more of that.

That sounds really interesting Linda, I will be looking into that one. Thanks for sharing!

Excellent post, Christina!!! I have been dying to read The Happiness Project 🙂 I was thisclose to picking it up the other day at Barnes and Noble but decided I’d check the library first. I have yet to make it down there, so perhaps I’ll end up just purchasing it anyways. I feel like that would be a good book to have lying around 🙂

Thanks for compiling this list! I have so much reading to do in 2016. A book that I found to be an excellent leadership/personal development resource is “Leading for Results” by Joan Bragar (http://bostonleadership.com/). There are so many valuable tools in this book it’s like it’s own mini leadership course. This book focuses on “The Results Model” which is a process that frames the challenges you (and your team, if at work) want to face and there are exercises that help clarify each step along the way, What I found most inspiring was at the end of the book when the author tells her own story of how she had to “practice what you preach” and her trials and tribulations after surviving a plane crash. Definitely a book to read if you want to make a difference in your leadership style or need help to overcome a challenge in your own life.I hope you and your readers will check it out

These are excellent suggestions! Thank you for sharing them!
I need to read The Paperless Home. Paper clutter can get so overwhelming! I have started switching a lot of things over to paperless and/or scanning as a pdf so I can shred the paper and recycle it. It sounds like a great book!
The Happiness Project – I bought that right before moving a year and a half ago but we moved near the beach and the salt and humidity destroyed our books so they got packed up again. I moved again recently and found this and it is on my list of books to read in 2016.
The 7 Habits & How to Win Friends… great books that should get read over and over again.
The Amazon Prime borrowing – is that for ebooks only? Just wondering because I have Prime but I haven’t even looked at the other benefits of having it lol.
Christina Tiplea says
Thanks Rose!! Yes the Amazon Prime borrowing is for ebooks only – definitely worth checking out 🙂 I love it!

II’m bookmarking this post, Christina. I have a hard time finding time to read but I think I would choose the Happiness Project first! Thanks for all the great ideas!
